This article focuses on the always controverted question about the native indians in
Argentina and the conflict around the borders, which became very strong in the second
half of the XIX century. The missions wanted to be an alternative to the militar
solution of the conflict. The Church had then the firm decision to protect the indians
in their struggle against the goverment and to show them a horizon of a new life, in
which the transforming strenght of cristianism could help them to carry on with their
lives in spite of the suffering they were going through.
