The paper presents an analysis of a key passage regarding the polemics between Socratics: Aulus Gellius' description of the relationship between Plato and Xenophon in Noctes Atticae 14.3. Gellius describes the usual perception of the link between the two Socratics, their supposed rivalry, and seeks to provide an explanation for this animosity that is questioned. To address this question, the article will go through a series of problems: Gellius’ biographism, the intellectual agonism of the Second Sophistry, the lexicon of rivalry, and the academic impact of Noctes Atticae 14.3.
