Abstract

Between 1916 and 1939 the “Catalans of America” of Buenos Aires spread and provided economic support to the Catalan independentism born of the premises of the cultural catalanism. The correspondence of the group and the articles they published at “Ressorgiment” magazine allow us to establish their activism, by studying the ideological counterpoint between them and Francesc Cambó, leader of the Lliga Regionalista de Catalunya, political party founded in 1901. Tensions between both conceptions allow to analyze the issue of cultural and political catalanism during the interwar period, when national groups ruled by former European empires clamoured for independence.
