Abstract

Since its Independence in 1947, successive Republic of India’s governments have implemented rural development policies, among which the formation of microfinance schemes stands out, as a tool for the eradication of poverty. The aim of this article is to explore domestic implications of those schemes and analyze some public policies implemented by the government of India, to conclude in which way they were efficient in terms of poverty alleviation. Lastly, microfinance will be linked to Sustainable Development Goals N° 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 y 9, which India must consider due to its international commitment. This article will try to illustrate how microfinance is a useful mechanism for the eradication of poverty and the promotion of well-being.
