Abstract

The author describes the medieval Catholic thought around natural resources, in particular forests, animals and subsoil; and refers to the ways in which moral thinkers –as Saint Antoninus of Florence, Francisco de Vitoria, Domingo de Soto and Saint Francis of Assisi, amongst others– contributed and influenced economic thought. Furthermore, the article provides a complete analysis on how eminent domain and private property theory applies to natural goods. In addition, the article focuses on the notion of subsoil property. Finally, it emphasizes that none of the mentioned moral thinkers consider damage to nature itself, but related to the impact on human person and common good.
