Abstract

This paper explores the impact of the involvement of Malinche as an interpreter and mediator between cultures in the Massacre of Cholula during the Conquest of America. In the Mexican imaginary, her role as a communicator between the colonizer and the colonized is the origin of the way she has been portrayed over the last five centuries: Malinche, the traitor. On the other hand, contemporary Chicana writers describe her as Malinche, the victim. This paper analyzes opposite views regarding her participation and explores the possibility of a new representation with the purpose of reaching a balanced approach.
