Abstract

In this paper I deal with analyzing the links between lost masterpieces, the attribution of sculptures as old copies, and the possibility of creating reconstructions from them and thanks to the making of sculptural tracings. Specifically, we will focus on the case of study of the Athena Lemnia, a sculpture made by Phidias. I will focus on highlighting the way in which the reference to Phidias was studied by Adolf Furtwängler, German archaeologist and art historian, to identify a series of material remains as “exact copies” of the lost original one.
