La fragancia de la Virgen María en el primer siglo de la Compañía de Jesús (1540-1640): devoción, conflicto y evangelización

Resumen

Las congregaciones marianas instituidas por los jesuitas a partir de 1563 participaron de un doble movimiento de defensa y expansión del catolicismo. Constituidas como bastión del papel fundamental de la Virgen María en la fe cristiana frente a la crítica de luteranos y calvinistas; también colaboraron decisivamente en la evangelización, considerada como un perfume que se extendería por todo el mundo. En este artículo, tras recordar la importancia que tuvo para los primeros jesuitas su devoción a Nuestra Señora, abordaremos algunas imágenes aromáticas que ocuparon los comentarios y meditaciones jesuitas acerca de la vida de la Madre de Dios y del rosario en su recorrido histórico. Y una de ellas, la del incensario identificado con la Virgen María del que partiría el humo perfumado de la palabra de Dios, nos llevará finalmente a considerar algunos ejemplos de prácticas evangelizadoras en Asia y América relacionadas con la fragancia de Nuestra Señora.
